The M.A.S.™ Miniscrew Anchorage System after years of research and development by
Stefano Velo M.D., D.D.S, Aldo Carano D.M.D., and Cristina Incavorti D.M.D., M.S.D., was first introduced in Europe in 2003, giving the Orthodontist total control of anchorage during any type of orthodontic treatment. The M.A.S. System contributed to a new philosophy in Orthodontics on how to use and where to position the skeletal fixed point of anchorage. The M.A.S. System quickly became well known in Italy, England, France, Germany, Belgium, Russia, and Canada.
The first M.A.S. System featured a self-tapping miniscrew that was extremely strong with a blunt tip so as to not injure root, sinus. The self-tapping insertion procedure called for the use of Surgical Guides which were included for patient safety - which was critically important for Orthodontist who were first learning the new technique. Surgical Guides would be in place during the procedure ensuring placement into bone-safe zones. The insertion procedure called for a 2mm pilot hole and the screw would be inserted into the pilot hole, tapping into the bone to its full length, ensuring the tightest, primary stability possible.
The M.A.S. Self-Tapping Miniscrew was a result of the combined efforts of researchers from the Engineering, Orthodontic, and Oral Surgical fields. Strength, comfort, and safety were three important keys to its brilliant design. Made of the highest quality Titanium Grade V, and perfectly biocompatible, the M.A.S. strength and flexure tests prove it is well capable of withstanding forces in excess of any conventional force applied in Orthodontics. The screw is immediate loading after insertion and its success rate impressive.
The M.A.S. head is spherical with a groove in the middle for the attachment of elastics, chains or coil springs. In addition, there is a 0.65 mm aperture where auxiliaries (Monkey hooks, metallic wires, NiTi coil) may be attached. The head of the screw contains an internal hexagon opening for turning and tightening the screw. It is located at the top - ensuring the screwdriver never comes into contact with gingival tissue. The M.A.S. head and neck is perfectly smooth for better compatibility with gingival tissue reducing incidence of inflammation.
The M.A.S. Self-Drilling Miniscrew was introduced in 2009 as more Orthodontist
have become familiar and have incorporated temporary skeletal anchorage into their practices. The M.A.S. Self-Drilling miniscrew requires no pre-drilling prior to insertion. Surgical Guides were also designed and included in this M.A.S. Self-Drilling System to ensure patient safety.
Both M.A.S. Self-Tapping and Self-Drilling Miniscrews are made of the highest quality Titanium Grade V. Product design, research, and manufacturing phases have all been subject to rigid criteria of quality and safety, adhering to the most modern health care practices available. FDA approved and manufactured to ISO9000 & EN4600 standards.
Both M.A.S. Self-Tapping and Self-Drilling Miniscrews are versatile and may be used for labial or lingual technique. Insertion procedures are simple in both systems and may be used in growing and adult patients.
